The Mount Nelson is more than a storied luxury hotel -it’s a Cape Town institution gracefully evolving with the city while growing as a hub of art and design.
For over a century, this iconic pink landmark has welcomed guests from Winston Churchill and John Lennon to Oprah and Bill Clinton. It has a global pedigree, yet its spirit is gracious and effortlessly relaxed.
Wander through its manicured gardens and timeless interiors, and you’ll find old-world charm refreshed by bold contemporary art and design. Today, “The Nellie” hums with creative energy – from rotating art exhibitions to the incredible annual Confections x Collections, which brings together fashion, art and gastronomy in style.

This December marks a new chapter. Fashion designer Thebe Magugu will unveil his own permanent suite – a celebration of contemporary African culture and craftmanship. At the same time, the hotel will welcome Amura, a new marine-inspired restaurant by Spanish Michelin-starred chef Angel León. Expect an inventive seafood menu rooted in local, sustainable ingredients, with fermentation, fire-cooking, and kelp forest motifs woven through both cuisine and design.

During our recent stay, we checked into a suite in the Green Park building, more stylish apartment than hotel room. Layered with texture and art, it opened onto a slender balcony, while the expansive marble bathroom shimmered with elegance. A discreet kitchenette, complete with microwave and coffee machine, added a thoughtful touch of home.
High tea at the Mount Nelson remains a ritual worth savoring. Picture tiers of pastries, cakes and sandwiches, accompanied by not old-fashioned salon music, but contemporary flair with those keyboards.
With over 60 loose-leaf and flowering teas, the experience is an indulgence. Younger guests are catered for too, with playful treats like cake pops, hummus with veggie sticks, and caramel popcorn (R595 per adult, R350 per child under 12; hourly sittings from 11am to 3 pm).
Then there’s the glamorous Planet Bar: sip a perfectly balanced negroni, a crisp martini, or the signature Rose on Rose – a delicate fusion of pink gin, rosé, wine, rose petals and spice. Mornings begin at Oasis, where breakfast is served near the pool area, and weekends bring smooth jazz to the same area. Downstairs, The Red Room by Chefs Warehouse offers an Asian-inspired premium dining experience – moody and elegant in a chic setting beneath the hotel.

It’s the details that linger: dusky-pink sugar packets stamped with palm trees, art-deco uniforms, and concierge jackets in the hotel’s signature hues. Through thoughtful design and creative collaboration, the Mount Nelson has reinvented its heritage.
Now 125 years old and last year ranked 28th in The World’s Best Hotels, and this year 73 – the hotel continues to embody Cape Town’s charm – a grande dame and pink lady for every season.
